Continuing in our series focusing a spotlight on classes with space remaining, we turn today to our older Ballet class being offered this spring.
No performing arts education is complete without basic ballet skills and technique. Ballet for older students builds confidence, self awareness, self control, and poise – all necessary skills to master before entering any arts profession. Students in Miss Heather’s class have been surprised at how much fun they have in class, all while learning detailed technique. The atmosphere is warm and encouraging, while the instruction is professional and precise. This year we are also offering yoga, which is similar in its benefits to performing arts students.
Heather began her training with Boston Ballet and continued with Ballet Theatre of Boston performing as a member of Youth Works. Through college, she was able to continue her study of ballet with Rockford Dance Company of Illinois and became a part of the Celonia Modern Dance Company of Beloit. At that time, she also started teaching beginner ballet to the mostly modern dance population of Beloit College. She has performed in a broad range of classical and contemporary works including The Nutcracker, Cinderella, and Wreath of Memories. She has been performing with Spindle City Ballet since 2008 and started teaching ballet and modern in 2011. In 2013 she decided to rededicate her life to teaching and creating dance. She is currently teaching ballet and modern in several schools in the New England area and performing on occasion with Freedom Dances. Her most recent choreography was performed as part of the aMaSSiT program at The Dance Complex in Boston. She is looking forward to another great season with A Work in Progress.
This class will be an excellent way to introduce students to the practice of yoga. Students will stretch and tone muscles, release chronic tension, de-stress and refresh. Yoga also helps to calm restless thought, cultivate concentration, support mental clarity and confidence. Classes begin with warm-up movements and breath awareness to prepare for yoga postures. The heart of each class is a sequence of postures that stretch, strengthen, and balance your body. No previous yoga experience required. These classes will focus on the physical benefits of Yoga.

An excellent class to brush up on skills, improve skills, or learn ballet for the first time, in this class the level of ballet technique covered will be based upon the experience of the students who sign up to participate. It is open to those who have never practiced ballet before, or those who have more advanced training and would like a chance to focus on technique. We will focus on the execution of basic steps as well as add to our vocabulary some slightly more complicated ballet movements. Comfortable, snug, but stretchy clothing is recommended. Socks or ballet slippers may be worn on the feet. Any long hair should be pulled back securely away from the face.
